[IT Note] Browser War: Google Chrome vs MS IE

Around 1990, the dot-com boom began, as the PC and Internet were being developed.

Netscape Navigator was the first leading browser, and Microsoft's Internet Explorer (shortly, IE) followed, but Navigator held a 70% share of the PC market until 1998.

Microsoft's Windows PC, on the other hand, surpassed 90% market share, and MS included Internet Explorer preloaded with the Windows operating system, prompting the US Department of Justice to sue MS in the US Supreme Court for antitrust violations.

The US Supreme Court, on the other hand, confirmed that the local court's order was reversed and remanded for the drafting of a new order.

So, finally, in 1998-001, the United States government recognized the benefits of merging a web browser into an operating system, and there were some issues that the US government dropped Section 1 of the Sherman Act - it would have had to prove that Microsoft's instance of tying caused more harm than good.

Browser Market Share by year

As a result of this result, even Microsoft provided a web browser selection option to PC makers or customers, but "Windows OS + IE" dominated for over a decade, but "Android + Chrome" & "iOS + Safari" have copied MS to gain market share.

From 2007 to 2020, Microsoft lost the mobile OS war to Android and iOS, which means that MS IE/Edge will lose its dominant position.

Furthermore, Google Chrome is more competitive than Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Browser market share by platform

Google Chrome was able to become the number one web browser in the market by offering a number of advantages over Microsoft Internet Explorer, such as:

  • Speed: Google Chrome was designed with speed in mind. It uses a minimalist design and streamlines many features to run more quickly and efficiently than Internet Explorer.
  • Simplicity: Google Chrome's design is simple and clean, making it easy to use for most people, even those who are not technically savvy.
  • Security: Google Chrome includes a variety of security features, such as an automatic update system that ensures users have the most up-to-date security fixes.
  • Extensions: Google Chrome offers a vast array of extensions that allow users to customize their browsing experience and tailor the browser to their needs.
  • Cross-platform compatibility: Google Chrome works on multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it accessible to a wider range of users.
  • Innovation: Google Chrome was developed with a focus on innovation and new features, which has helped it stay ahead of Internet Explorer in terms of functionality and user experience.

Overall, Google Chrome's combination of speed, simplicity, security, extensions, cross-platform compatibility, and innovation has made it a popular and widely used web browser, helping it to surpass Microsoft Internet Explorer in market share.
